G&A Partners' client is currently seeking a Director of Material Science to join its team in Millcreek, UT.

 

Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Quality and Material Director with a mechanical engineering background to join our team. The ideal candidate will possess expertise in solid models, FEA simulations, and technical drawings with GD&T, combined with a deep understanding of metallurgical properties, coatings, treatments, and manufacturing techniques. This role requires the ability to lead and collaborate across engineering, operations, and quality teams to develop and implement controls and systems that ensure top-tier product quality and material performance.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the quality assurance and material engineering teams to ensure alignment with engineering and operational goals.
  • Develop, implement, and manage quality control systems, including material specifications and testing procedures.
  • Oversee the integration of solid models and FEA simulations into product development processes to ensure optimal material selection and performance.
  • Use advanced knowledge of GD&T to review and create engineering drawings for manufacturing.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive continuous improvements in manufacturing techniques, material properties, and product durability.
  • Utilize Six Sigma principles (DMAIC, DOE, JMp) and relevant software to manage process improvements and troubleshoot any production or material issues.
  • Analyze metallurgical properties, coatings, and treatments to ensure materials meet performance and regulatory standards.
  • Foster an environment of collaboration, quality control, and ongoing professional development for staff members.
  • Provide leadership and technical guidance in solving complex material and quality issues across product lines.

Qualifications

  • Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering (or related field). A master’s degree is a plus.
  • Experience: Minimum of 10 years of experience in quality and material engineering, ideally in manufacturing or product development.
  • Certifications: Six Sigma certification (Black Belt or Green Belt preferred), or equivalent quality management certifications.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Proficiency in solid modeling, FEA simulations, and drawing with GD&T.
    • Strong understanding of metallurgical properties, coatings, treatments, and advanced manufacturing techniques.
    • Expertise in using software such as DMAIC, DOE, JMp, or similar quality and testing methodologies.
  • Leadership Skills: Proven ability to lead and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to achieve high-quality standards and process improvements.
  • Experience with materials testing methodologies and managing supplier relations for materials and quality assurance.
